The Samuel and Edith Fleischman Summer Academy for Holocaust Education and Genocide Prevention 2024

The second edition of the Samuel and Edith Fleischman Summer Academy for Holocaust Education and Genocide Prevention came to a close on July 4, 2024. Co-organized by the Auschwitz Institute for the Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocities (AIPG) and the Oświęcim Institute of Human Rights (OIPC), the Summer Academy was held in Oświęcim, Poland from June 30 – July 4, 2024 and was attended by 20 teachers and educators from Poland. The Summer Academy was supported by a team of excellent lecturers and long-term practitioners of educational activities, which guaranteed an in-depth and open discussion about the challenges and opportunities facing educators as they work to counter anti-Semitism, polarization, and xenophobia.

An indispensable part of the program’s educational approach included a visit to the International Center for Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust at the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, as well as a visit to the Auschwitz Jewish Center and Synagogue in Oświęcim. While at the Franciscan Monastery in the village of Harmęże, located near Oświęcim, participants also had the opportunity to tour Marian Kołodzej’s exhibit, "The Labyrinth."

As a result of the Summer Academy, a network of teachers, educators, and lecturers committed to countering and preventing anti-Semitism, xenophobia, racism, and hate speech has emerged. These educators are now better placed to widely disseminate the knowledge they gained to promote holocaust education and prevent genocide. As members of this network, they can also share their educational experiences with each other, supporting their colleagues in peace activities. AIPG looks forward to supporting them in their future projects with youth throughout Poland.

The 2024 edition of the Samuel and Edith Fleischman Summer Academy for Holocaust Education and Genocide Prevention was possible thanks to generous support from Edward Fleischman and his family.
