Call for Participation - International Seminar in Bucharest: Unpacking the Past – Strengthening Democratic Resilience and Human Rights through Education and Youth Empowerment

Bucharest, Romania

18- 22 November 2024

Are you studying at a university in Germany or Romania? Are you passionate about human rights, history and politics, and worried about democratic backsliding in your country? Do you wonder how you can contribute to preventing atrocities worldwide and building more peaceful and just societies? Would you like to join an international network of human rights practitioners who are committed to building a world without genocide and other mass atrocities? If this applies to you, join us in Bucharest for a five-day seminar that will explore how the lessons of a traumatic past can help us understand the challenges of the present and shape an empowered and resilient future!

The Seminar

Unpacking the Past -Strengthening Democratic Resilience and Human Rights through Education and Youth Empowerment is a customized training seminar organized by the Auschwitz Institute for the Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocities (AIPG) in partnership with the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, and with the support of the Rule of Law Programme South East Europe of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung e.V.

Through this pilot program, we aim to create a seed network of young students from Germany and Romania who are trained in the latest prevention strategies to combat the current trends of democratic erosion and radicalization in their societies. Starting from the lessons of a traumatic past and the ways its memory shaped democracy in both countries, participants will achieve an understanding of the processes and risk factors that can lead to identity-based mass violence. At the same time, they will be empowered with foundational knowledge and practical competencies to contribute to building a world where never again will people be targeted for violence and death due to their identity. After the program, they will continue supporting each other in identifying best practices to foster dialogue with the ultimate goal of advancing democratic values, human rights, and a prevention culture in their communities.
