Today, the Auschwitz Institute for the Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocities (AIPG) commemorates the Day of International Criminal Justice, reaffirming its commitment to accountability, justice, and the prevention of mass atrocities around the world.
Located in The Hague, the Netherlands, the International Criminal Court (ICC) is the world's first and only permanent international criminal court. It is responsible for investigating and prosecuting individuals accused of genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and the crime of aggression when States are unable or unwilling to do so. Through international criminal justice, the Court holds perpetrators accountable and contributes to preventing the recurrence of such atrocities.
Currently, 125 countries are parties to the Rome Statute.. While that number has grown slowly and unevenly, the global commitment is clear: Africa contributes 33 States Parties; the Asia-Pacific, 19; Eastern Europe, 20; Latin America and the Caribbean, 28; and Western Europe and Others, 25.
On this Day of International Criminal Justice, AIPG reaffirms its commitment to advancing robust international justice mechanisms as a cornerstone of atrocity prevention. By fostering collaboration and building capacity among state actors, civil society, and ICC officials, our programs empower stakeholders to investigate, prevent, and respond effectively to mass atrocities.
We recognize that ending cycles of violence and achieving lasting peace depend on upholding accountability and human rights. The age of impunity must come to an end. As we mark this anniversary, the call for international criminal justice is more urgent than ever to protect human dignity worldwide.
Finally, AIPG recognizes all those whose dedication advances the pursuit of justice: prosecutors, analysts, lawyers, civil society organizations, and survivors who courageously pursue truth and accountability, often at significant personal risk.
